Fredro Starr
Fredro Starr is not just a performer. He is a creative force expressing himself through acting, music, writing and producing. Fredro has always kept his plate full, first through his music with hardcore rap group Onyx, and then as a solo artist and as an actor.
Fredro (born Fredro Scruggs) got his start out of South Jamaica, Queens, as a founding member of Onyx. In addition to Fredro, the early lineup featured his cousin Sticky Fingaz, Sonsee (formerly Suavé), and Big DS. The group's first album in 1993 for Def Jam Records went platinum with hits "Slam," "Throw Ya Gunz," and "Shifftee." Onyx, minus Big DS, went on to release several other albums for Def Jam, including All We Got Iz Us and Shut 'Em Down.
Onyx left Def Jam after its 1998 release Shut 'Em Down, and temporarily broke up. Fredo released his first solo album, Firestarr in 2001; Onyx reunited the next year. Fredro's second album Don't Get Mad Get Money was released in 2003.
Between the release of the group's albums, Fredro and Sticky Fingaz expanded their repertoire, appearing in several movies. They appeared in Clockers, and have continued to compile impressive screen credits.
Fredro made his acting debut in Strapped, Forest Whitaker's 1993 award-winning HBO drama. Fredro's performance earned him a Cable ACE nomination for best supporting actor. The soundtrack features several Onyx songs. Fredro's film credits include Save the Last Dance, Sunset Park, Ride, The Addiction, Light It Up, and The Eddie Black Story. He also contributed to the soundtracks of Save the Last Dance, Sunset Park, and Light It Up.
On television, Fredro's credits include recurring roles on CSI: NY and CSI: Miami, Blade: The Series, NYPD Blue, and The Wire as Marquis “Bird” Hilton. He was also a regular on Moesha, playing the title character's fiancé.
Fredro produced the documentary about Onyx mentor Jam Master Jay titled Two Turntables & A Microphone: The Life & Death of Jam Master Jay.
Continuing his busy schedule, Fredro recently completed After Hours: The Movie. And Onyx (Fredro and Sticky Fingaz) is in the midst of a tour -- to the approval of their fans.
